Fall Home Tour

Here in Florida we are getting a “cold front” that is bringing us way down into the 80 degree temps. *insert eye roll*. I am born and raised in Central Florida though, so I know as a true Floridian, that one must take the slight break from sweating profusely and run with it! By run with it, I mean decorate my house to scream all things FALL and COZY!! Take a peak around to see how I’m trying to keep in minimal but still festive for the fall season this year…

When I decorate for a season, I tend to pick a color palette of three to four tones that I’m crushing on and then make all my decisions based on that. Once I have the colors in mind that I’m working with, then I know what pieces I’m going to use from my stash of years prior, which ones can stay packed away, and the direction I need to go when picking new items out in the store.

Speaking of shopping for new items… I get overwhelmed in the store easily. I like to say my creative ADD kicks into full gear when I am surrounded by lots of beautiful things. It’s easy for me to lose focus and intention when in the store and all of the presenting seasonal items are calling my name. When I have a game plan before I start to shop, then I feel like I can keep it under control. It helps keep my spending down (my husband is laughing at that line) and even makes the process easier. Even if I like something, but it isn’t in the realm of the look I am going for that particular year, I know it is best to pass.

I strongly believe in purchasing items that don’t limit you to a holiday as well. A throw with ghosts on it… yup that’s going to work for just Halloween. A mustard chunky yarn throw can be pulled into many different seasons, fall and spring alike. I’m not saying you have to kick any themed stuff to the curb. I’m just recommending that you splurge where it counts and keep a budget with the stuff that doesn’t go the distance.

Sometimes I like to go ALL OUT. Christmas time usually gets a huge footprint in my home. Other holidays I minimally decorate. I don’t know if its my current season of life or because my kids are getting older but I’m currently in a “less is more” phase of holiday decorating. Don’t hold me too it though. I have a feeling it’ll look like Santa barfed on my living room in a few months. My advice though is to follow your gut. Decorate to the extent that brings you joy. once you’ve crossed over into your decor being a burden amongst the holiday, it’s gone too far.

Faux plants/flowers aren’t what they used to be. Fall foliage is all the rage. The easiest way to add warmth and switch out decor for the holiday that last longer than just the pending holiday is seasonally appropriate stems. Your mama’s plastic leaved and fake looking house plants aren’t what we are talking about here. The mothership Magnolia is even on board with the trend. Faux stems these days are much better quality and done way more realistic than their forefathers. Make sure you pick realistic stems that match your color palette and it’s a simple way to make a big impact.

So how can you get your decor to last through the entire season?

  • PICK A COLOR PALETTE

  • PLAN AHEAD OF TIME SO YOU PURCHASE INTENTIONALLY

  • SPLURGE ON QUALITY SEASONAL DECOR & SAVE ON HOLIDAY SPECIFIC

  • DECORATE AS MUCH AS STILL BRINGS YOU JOY

  • FAUX STEMS BRING FAUX-REAL IMPACT (SO CORNY I CAN’T HELP IT)
